This section of our website will help you take more responsibility for the earth. ‘Eco’ is short for ‘ecology.’ Ecology mean all the different life forms on this planet, and how they all work together. An example is a tree. All kinds of creatures live in tree, from squirrels and birds to bugs. Different animals lives on bugs, birds are important as are squirrels—they all have jobs. If one of these is missing, it throws off the balance. Did you know that often, bears eat bugs? What would happen if all the bugs were gone? Lots of animals do eat bugs.
So you see, it is important that we take care of the things on our planet. If we use more than our share of water, what will happen for someone else who needs it? A true princess would care very much about her environment, whether she lived on the earth or on some magical planet.
Since we are on Planet Earth, we should look after it and care for it. You can mess up a pair of shoes and buy new shoes. You can accidentally break a glass or plate and buy a new one. You may crash a bicycle, and that, too, can be replaced. But we have not heard of planets for sale at the ‘planet store.’
It is easy to forget that one person can make a difference, but it is very true. Often one gardener can be responsible of a huge garden in a park. And it is often one idea that sparks people, and soon the idea grows. So it is with helping clean up the planet.
The best place to start is in your own home. Do you take long showers? In some places where there is plenty of rainfall, that is not a problem. But hot water uses either gas or electricity. You do not want to use more than your share, so take shorter showers! Baths don’t use as much water as showers, but often we don’t have time for a bath.
When you wash dishes, do you leave the water running when you are not rinsing a dish? That is also wasteful.
How about the electric lights in your home? Have you heard your father or mother exclaiming, “Doesn’t anyone turn off lights around here?” We sure have! And now we are saying it, too! Electricity costs money and uses up natural resources. Natural resources are things like wood that we find on our planet. We do not want to use everything up, so we need to use as little as possible so there is more to go around.
