A Few Important Things to Know
There is really no such thing as ‘princess food.’ Different princesses would eat different food, depending on what they liked, and on what food is available to them.
There are about as many different ideas about food and nutrition as there are people. Here are a few simple rules that will make it easier:
Each body is different. Some bodies do well with a little meat or fish, some do not do well with meat at all. Some bodies do well with dairy, and others cannot handle it one bit. Some bodies can handle certain fruit, while others have bad reactions. And so it goes. There is not ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to food. It may work with a scarf or a pair of bedroom slippers, but not with food.
Then there is how much money you have to spend. How wonderful to only eat organic food. But it is very expensive, and not always available. So you eat sensibly. Try not to eat foods high in sugar or additives. Additives would be artificial color and flavor, that sort of thing. Learn to cook things or make from scratch (a homemade sandwich will win over a deli sandwich on purity of ingredients most of the time).
Try to eat smaller amounts. It takes a few minutes after eating for the body to signal that it is full. So eat a serving and enjoy conversation, and in 10 minutes you will know if you’ve eaten enough.
Salads and veggies are good for you. Find yummy and creative ways to eat and serve them. Be sensible. Unless you are allergic, a little sugar won’t kill you. If you don’t eat veggies one day, you won’t die. If you overeat from time to time, don’t worry. Be sensible!
GLOSSARY
allergic means that you might sneeze or get a rash because of some food that does not agree with your body.
artificial is something that is not real—it is a fake or a copy. This is not always bad. In food, though, artificial flavors can mean it is made up of mixtures that are not good for a healthy body. Artificial colors mean that the color is from a mixture to make it look red or blue. Foods that are really red or blue (like blueberries or strawberries) are not bad for the body (unless you are allergic to them). Sometimes people are allergic to artificial flavors or artificial colors in foods. It can make someone cry or get angry or be tired or run around to much. You want to try not to eat food that has artificial flavors or artificial colors.
available what you are able to get at a store or someplace else
body you could describe a body as a living machine. It is your arms and legs, your stomach and heart and lungs and all the other parts that you use to get things done. If you were to put water in the gas tank of your car, it would not run (unless you had a very special car). Like a car, a body needs energy to run, and it gets its energy from the right kinds of food.
deli is short for delicatessen. That is a store (which sometimes is also a restaurant) where you can buy all kinds of meats and cheeses. Sometimes they have other food as well. They also make sandwiches. These are often called deli sandwiches. They can taste very good. But sometimes there are ingredients in some of the meats that are not too good for a person. Again, sometimes a deli sandwich is fine. But sometimes you it is good to use very fresh ingredients and make a sandwich at home. They can be very yummy, and do not cost as much.
expensive costing a lot of money, or more money than you are able to spend.
ingredients are what certain food is made of. A pizza has flour, oil, salt, cheese, sometimes meat and sometimes vegetables. Many times there are other ingredients in the meat, like spices. Sometimes meat or other food has ingredients like artificial color or artificial flavor.
nutrition is food and liquid that is good for your body. Bugs would be good nutrition for a bear, but maybe not for a person. Dish soap would not be good nutrition for any living thing (at least not that we know about).
‘one size fits all’ is a phrase which means clothing that is made in only one size, sometimes a bit stretchy, so that it should fit anyone who is an average size (not to tall and not too short).
organic A lot of food is grown using poisons in order to keep bugs from eating the food while it grows. Animals, too, are fed food that is grown with certain poisons so the bugs won’t eat that, either. Organic food is grown without using those kinds of poisons to keep bugs away. There are different ways to grow food to keep bugs off. Sometimes lady bugs are used because they like to eat other bugs but will not eat the food being grown.
More and more food is being grown organically. Organic food is more expensive, and is not always available in certain places. That is why you look at ingredients, so even if you cannot eat organic food, you can eat food that does not have too many artificial flavors or colors, things like that. And that is why it is important to wash your fruit and vegetables before you eat them.
reaction is something that happens to a body because of something else. A bee sting can cause a reaction where somebody will get red bumps on his or her body. Sometimes a reaction is sneezing or coughing after eating or drinking something.
sensible is doing something the smart way.
sugar tastes sweet, and there are many different kinds. There is a certain kind of sugar in milk, there is a certain kind of sugar in fruits and juices, there is white sugar from sugar cane and date sugar from dates. There is honey and maple syrup. Some sugars are not as bad for a person as others. Little babies should not have honey. Many times too much sugar makes a person tired or cranky. It can also cause cavities in your teeth and can cause weight gain. A little bit is not terrible, but too much, like too much of anything, is not a good idea.
veggies is a shortened word for vegetables. Vegetables have a lot of wonderful things for a healthy body, and if you know how to use them with different cheese and things like that, they can taste very wonderful.
